Leaving New York
Tonight I leave New York for a two-month adventure in South America. I have spent many months planning this trip, not just the itinerary, but also the logistics of matching my time off with Bryna’s and Arie’s, as well as taking two months off of work! The timing is perfect. When we return, I will be promoted, and Arie will begin his new career as a top-notch lawyer. After this, our vacations will be limited to two to three weeks per year – max! For me, this trip is a must.
I will begin my trip with my sister in Medellin, Colombia. Originally, I had planned to take Spanish class in Cartagena while Arie hiked somewhere in the California wilderness with friends. Happily, my sister has some time off and will now join me. We have no real plans set in stone. Maybe we’ll do some diving, maybe we’ll do some hiking; we will float wherever the warm Caribbean breezes would like to take us.
My sister will then head home before embarking on her own adventure to her newest professional outpost, South Sudan. I will meet Arie in Bogota. After a quick trip to the Colombian Amazon, we will be prisoners of the bus, well, multiple buses. The remainder of our trip will be overland through Ecuador and all the way down to Cusco, Peru.
We have not made any transportation or lodging reservations; we will find them as we go. We have our tent and sleeping bags, which we plan to use as often as we can. Hotels will be an urban luxury providing a brief break to our tired soles and aching backs. It will be a fun adventure, and I look forward to sharing it!
Goodbye for now – Liana
